ProBlogger 2016 – The new-bee perspective


Last weekend I headed off to the ProBlogger training event for the first time. What an experience it was! About 500 people attended 2 days of presentations and workshops that taught, inspired and influenced. Who would have thought that there are so many bloggers out there?

The conference started with a networking event on Thursday night. Walking in to a room with hundreds of people, none of whom you know, is akin to the first day in a new school! Now I won’t say that I didn’t go to the bar first. Standing in the line at least gave the illusion that I was doing something. And it gave me a chance to scope the room and work out what to do next!

The various blogging niches were allocated areas around the room. I soon found my tribe in the space signed ‘Lifestyle’. Everyone I met was so friendly, both during the first evening and in the 2 days that followed. I was so excited to get the chance to meet some of my favourite bloggers. Hopefully noone felt like I was stalking them, except maybe Miss Chardy who I tracked down for another photo on the Saturday!

The parallel sessions were at times difficult to choose between. The Problogger organisers provided guidance by creating blogger avatars. Prior to the event, we were introduced to ‘Nina Newbie’, ‘Hannah Hobby’, ‘Benjamin Business’, ‘Pippa Product’, ‘Ivanna Influence’, and ‘Mike Media’! Each avatar had a suggested schedule aligned with their purpose for blogging, for instance those just starting out or those who earn an income from blogging. I identified as somewhere between a Nina and a Hannah! The Fundamentals and Tools Tactics & Techniques sessions were the most relevant for me. Informative keynotes given by some great speakers tied the conference together brilliantly.

How many times do we attend a course or conference and come away with great ideas that are never implemented? What was particularly good about the organisation of this event was the effort that went into making our attendance worthwhile. We were sent a Attendee Workbook prior to the event. This encouraged us to undertake a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) of our blog and use this to inform our choice of sessions. But it went much further than this. The workbook contained an action list which we were advised to complete every day. Those into matrixes and cost-benefit analyses could then plot the impact of and effort required for each action, and use this as a guide to determine the scheduling of their actions. I did the SWOT, and filled in the Action List every day, but skipped the matrix which looked too much like maths to me. Plus I’m more of a ‘just get on with it and do it’ sort of person. That’s partly why I named my blog Jo Simply Will!

I came away from ProBlogger 2016 with lots of great ideas. One of them was to plan blog posts in ‘seasons’. A season is where a larger content idea is broken down into smaller, connected parts. I thought I would give it a try here! So look out for the following upcoming posts:

    Hi Jo! It was so good to meet you at the conference. Was it pre-drinks or after? 🙂 I must admit I didn’t do the graph either. Not that there was anything wrong with it, I’m just a big colour coded spreadsheet nerd, and that’s how I categorised my to do list. I’m interested to see how you go with the series of posts. I was considering monthly themes myself. I think my day job might swallow me whole in the consistency factor again. Gotta try though.

      Kirsten you must do a post on your colour coded spreadsheets! Like many, I’m always looking for new and more efficient ways to organise my lists and life! Monthly themes sounds like a great idea. However often it is, and whether it is in seasons or not, it’s great just to blog. We simple living niche gals have got a great message to share!
